School officials said at a news conference Wednesday that the boy was expelled as soon as school officials became aware of the violent cartier earrings song lyrics on April 7.
The sophomore later was charged with making terrorist threats after he was spotted in his front yard with a mock rifle and more threatening material was found at his home, police said.
Because the student was charged as a juvenile, police declined to release his name or age.The extra security was expected to remain in place for several days. The sophomore now faces expulsion from the school district, said Superintendent Carol Comeau.
Some parents feel the school district’s reaction was slow. But Comeau said officials acted swiftly and that she’s confident the school is safe for students and teachers. The news conference was held two weeks after the boy was expelled for the remainder of the school year.
"We do not believe the young man intended to carry out a specific plan, though we acknowledge it was a very unsettling poem and we understood that parents would be upset," Comeau said.
School District Director of Security and Emergency Preparedness Gardner Cobb said the district does not think there are any co-conspirators.
The boy wrote the lyrics, which make note of Columbine and boast an Anchorage attack would be far deadlier, and emailed them to a group of people March 30, Comeau said. A boy who is mentioned as one of several targets in the song or poem brought the e-mail to the school principal.
Police spokeswoman Anita Shell characterized the writing as related to therapy the boy received.
"The student was having some problems, and his counselor told him to write some things down to deal with his emotional problems," Shell said.
